Daylighting the buried history of Steptoe and Mill Creek in Old Westport with new development
Spring 2021
Old Westport
Redevelopment: Services
This project focused on the Old Westport area of Kansas City, Missouri. As a team, we determined the area of opportunity was the whole Northwest corner of 43rd Street and Broadway Boulevard, known as Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park, all the way through to the intersection of Mill Street and Westport Road. Utilizing blue-green infrastructure, creative placemaking, active transportation, and trail-oriented development, we developed a new Old Westport individually.
Old Westport 2040 is focused around walkability, an area that doesn't require private transportation, and has easy access to blue and green spaces. Daylighting the buried Mill Creek was the beginning of my trail development and I removed the Embassy Suites on the corner of 43rd Street and Broadway Boulevard to make the Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park into something that honors his history and brings new life to Old Westport.
